Service Dogs
What are service dogs exactly?
Service dogs can be any breed of dog specifically trained to to help their owner/handler with tasks which would be next to impossible without the assistance of the service dog. I hate using the word disability, as I personally find the word deneaning, but people with a service dog have a disability of some sort.
Common Types of Service Dogs
- Autism Service Dogs – assist people on the autism spectrum
- Guide Dogs – assist the blind
- Hearing Dogs – assist people with hearing issues and/or are deaf
- Medical Alert Dogs – trained to alert people with certain medical issues
- Mobility Dogs – help people with mobility issues like people in wheelchairs
- Psychiatric Service Dogs – trained with specific tasks to help mental health issues
- Seizure Alert Dogs – specific type of medical alert dog
For the sake of this website, I am going to be mainly focusing on psychiatric service dogs and a bit of the autism service dogs. If you would like more information about the other kinds of service dogs, I suggest that you search online for them.
