Giant Schnauzer
To be honest, I don’t know much about the Giant Schnauzer. And after watching the Breed All About it video, I’m a little intimidated by them. I want to keep my options open for a service dog. I’m sure if I raise one as a pup, that I will bond with it and I won’t be intimidated. Not sure if this is the breed for me.
Breed All About It Video
The Decision
I have decided to rule out this breed of dog because it’s more appropriate for protection work and for a service dog. (at least for myself) Whether this dog is appropriate for service dog work or not is not the issue… the issue for myself, is that I am afraid of this breed, and as someone who is going to be owner-training, I highly doubt that this will turn out. I do not think an owner of a pet dog should be intimidated by it’s pet… let alone a service dog! They are cute dogs, but I think a little too much for my liking!
I could go with the standard or even the miniature, but I don’t think the miniature schnauzer is big enough for want I want… and the standard I think is too close in size for me.
The decision for me is to stick with breeds that I know more about…

Yes, if your scared concerned of any breed you made the right choice. I do have one like them, softer breeds melt under my directions.

As a person who has a giant schnauzer as a service dog and loves the breed. I would say avoid this breed. It is a great breed for people who have a fair amount of experience with large dogs and who have trained dogs; but, if you don’t have the experience the dog will end up in rescue. They are high energy and high maintainance and can be very intimidating, especially the 98-99% that are black. They are great dogs, but only for experienced dog people.

I agree, they are great dogs however, they are not the breed for me. I know with this breed I would need to be constantly on top and focused, however part of my disability is not always being able to do that. I do have a lot of energy and I can just go go go – however, I often float into my own little world, and I need a dog that will not take advantage of that, but alert me to this happening. I would not be training the dog myself, as an organization would be training and keeping the dog for me until the pup is fully trained and I will be working along side of the dog and the trainers as I am now with Widget, who is a Chocolate Lab. But even with him, I find that if I disconnect with him he will do something I am not expecting. He is only a year in his training mind you – but I am glad I have chosen the breed I have. I am no longer afraid of the giant schnauzers, and taybe down the road when my first or second service dog retires
